#9: Don’t Follow your Dreams

Don’t follow your dreams.

Sounds crazy, right? 🤯

Going all-in on a passion is great but if you’re unable to make a living from it, you won’t be able to do it long-term and may even grow resentful of it.

On the other hand, staying with a comfortable job that doesn’t fulfill you is a recipe for disaster in the long term too.

That is where a Japanese concept comes in: ikigai. It tackles the question of a fulfilling life by breaking it up into 4 separate questions:

  1. What do you love?
  2. What does the world need?
  3. What can you get paid for?
  4. What are you good at?

The magic happens when you find the one thing that’s an answer to all 4 questions.

You’ll have a specific thing you’re passionate about that can sustain you, helps others, and doesn’t come with ridiculous effort.

Actionable advice for this week: find your Ikigai.

Answer the 4 separate questions on their own by creating exhaustive lists. Then see if there’s something that’s a part of all 4, or could become one.
